We were proud to team up with Tonya of the Lake Stevens Sewer District to create full-sized, double-sided truck stickers featuring color graphics and custom messaging designed to raise awareness and provide education to the general public on the impact of flushable wipes and grease clogs in sewer pipes, as well as environmental effects.

Recently, we had the opportunity to speak with Tonya on the overall success of the program, where she noted “the response has been great! People are talking about it and we’re getting the feedback we wanted.”

The City of Mesquite reached out to Goldstreet for a recent holiday promotion on the dangers associated with the improper disposal of fats, oils, and grease (FOG). Tim, with the City of Mesquite, informed the Goldstreet team of the concern with sanitary sewer overflows within the city caused by the growing number of residents running FOG materials down their drains.

To help raise awareness and provide education to the residents of Mesquite, TX, the Goldstreet team worked with Tim on the creation of a custom video designed to outline the hazards and risks that fat, oils, and grease pose on sewer pipes and the city’s water systems. While Tim noted it was “too soon to tell” what impact the initiative would have long-term, he expressed his satisfaction with the overall project, stating “getting the information in front of people we hope will pay off.”

Goldstreet Designs was proud to celebrate a successful collaboration with the City of Pacifica on the launch of their Fats, Oils, and Grease outreach program. Designed to raise awareness and provide education to Pacifica, CA residents on the risks and dangers of the improper disposal of fat, oil, and grease (FOG) and their effects on sewer and local water systems, Goldstreet worked with Jon, with the City of Pacifica, on the creation of various outreach materials, including video, brochures, and mailers to be shared throughout the public with teachers and city works departments.

Jon explained the importance of changing existing marketing materials, updating their videos to focus on providing concise, relevant information that was easy for the public to understand, and matched with their fact sheets, as well as the city’s website.

Jon noted that residents have expressed interest in additional outreach presentations throughout local schools and city departments. On follow up, he declared the program a success, noting that recipients of the materials have stated they “painted a clear picture on what not to do and how to help prevent adding more problems to the sewers” and furthering “plumbing issues.”

“It has led to more creative ideas [on] how to encourage preventive measures to limit FOG and what not to flush,” Jon stated in a recent success survey. The Goldstreet team is thrilled with the successes of this important outreach program.

SITUATION ANALYSIS: The City of Bend had an ongoing challenge to educate the public about Fats, Oils and Grease. Most customers simply don’t understand that the particles and grease they put down their drains can cause backups in both their homes and in the sewer lines. Originally, the City sought to do a live-action 30-second video commercial. It proved to be too expensive for their budget, and the stock footage they ended up with didn’t deliver the message clearly or effectively. With time and budget challenges, they came to Goldstreet for a solution.

SOLUTION: Because the commercial was set to run around Thanksgiving, Goldstreet suggested tailoring the message to the holidays to make it more pertinent to utility customers. With video education you want to make sure to grab attention and spark curiosity. Goldstreet achieved this by creating an animated video with “characters” to explain Fats, Oils and Grease. During the video there were suggestions on how to avoid clogs and backups in a simple and entertaining way to raise awareness and help promote behavior changes. Not only was the video finished on time for the City’s airdates, but the animated characters created by Goldstreet brought a touch of fun to a subject that can be dry and uninteresting to many people.

Once the video was created the City could post this to their website and include in social media campaigns.

Video Marketing is a great way to create engagement and educate any audience.

It is pretty obvious that an eighth grader and a first grader have much different needs when it comes to education, so why aren’t utilities making this distinction when producing kids outreach materials? Stormwater utilities across the country are including include kids in their outreach efforts, and much of the material tends to focus on 4th-8th grade. This makes perfect sense because in about 4th grade, kids are ready to start grasping concepts related to cause and effect as it relates to stormwater pollution; pet waste left here washes into to storm drain over there, pollution enters waterways down there, wildlife affected, here is how I can help.

Though stormwater utilities are doing a great job including kids in their education programs, there is one opportunity that is often overlooked, 1st through 3rd graders. Setting the stage for future discussions that include pollution and water quality are vital. These young elementary school kids need to first understand the role water plays in our life, before they can begin to understand how pollution gets into the water, how our actions effect water quality, and how we can all become the solution to pollution.

The City of El Centro, California decided to address the issue in their jurisdiction by developing two kids’ activity booklets, one for 1st-3rd graders and one for 4th-5th graders. They both address stormwater and drought issues, are fun, colorful and engaging, but they each approach the issues from an age-appropriate point of view to make the greatest impact.

The 1st-3rd grade booklet:

  • Introduces water as a vital resource for life
  • Shows how we are connected to waterways through storm drains
  • Provides basic pollution concepts
  • Includes a variety of simple, fun and engaging games and activities

The 4th-5th grade booklet:

  • Introduces water as a vital resource for life
  • Shows how we are connected to waterways through storm drains
  • Provides more in depth discussion about pollution sources
  • Empowers students to become part of the solution in their own neighborhood
  • Includes a variety of fun and engaging games and activities
